DVD Reviews (1/18/2011)

The Other Guys (D)

This film is about two cops Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) that never get teh good case, never get the bad guys, and quite frankly only exist in the office for the other officers enjoyment. The two heros of the squad (Sam L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson) are in the middle of a case and are ummm....removed from the equation. Its time for someone to step up as the "Big Dawgs" of the department and everyone wants in on the chance. With funny moments here and there but absolutely no real story to hold interest the film falls apart once Ferrells character starts with a schitzo personality named "Gator". Then film has some decent laughs and then just loses steam into the patented Ferrell movie "We are gonna beat this dead horse all movie" way. The movie has good small roles for Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Damon Wayans Jr., etc but lacks that power for me ever want to watch it again. Just one question...Who keeps approving these movies with Will Ferrell!?! I have a script for you since you....APPROVED!!!

The Social Network- (A)

This film based on Founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) was a great film with good drama and a great story line. We've all seen the court testimony telling the movie bit and it gets boring but the way that this was done through an arbitration type court telling was more personal. I thought all the young actors did a great job. (Not a huge stretch for Eisenberg) I thought Andrew Garfield was great as Eduardo and look forward to seeing him as Spidey! The thing I was worried was that Timberlake would ruin the film but actually held his own. The Winklevoss' played by Armie hammer was great as well. I had no idea it was one person until the credits rolled. I wouldve bet money it was two of them so therefore great effects. It opended my eyes on how the corporate would of Facebook looks behing the scenes and that it isnt just Status Updates, but what it took and what happened to create what we love and hate about FB. I thought the movie was amazing and is a great pic for the upcoming Oscars off its 4 Golden Globe wins!

Resident Evil: Afterlife (D-)

This "billionth" installment of the Resident Evil movies still stars Milla Jovovich as "Alice" with Ali Later as "Claire". This movie she is looking for her friends/survivors from the previous film that left in the choppa! They decided to head for a safe zone for surivors but as all the Resident movie go...Umbrella Corp wont allow that! The movie starts with a great action sequence and it is the 1st and last decent action scene. Alice doesnt really have too many "Alice kicking ass" scenes as we are used to and is seems like they had some left over budget and just threw this plot and movie together with alot of randomness and alot of thing stolen from the matrix. Its like they stole the leftovers of the agents from the Matrix and added it to the leftovers from the leftovers for this film. Ughhhh.

Pirahna- (B)

As far as bloody, Gore-packed films with stupid kids, a small staffed inept Sherrif Dept., a cocky rich asshole, and hot women everywhere for no damn reason....This film fits the bill! LOL! This is your typical something is wrong in the water thriller and great remake of the old Pirahna film. I thought it had enough gore for the shocker effect with enough comic relief to not be considered a horror film! I enjoyed it and it kept me entertained. Its not an Oscar film...its meant for some jump-scares and some laughs and random nudity. With stars in it such as Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Chistopher Lloyd, Jerry O'Connell, and a cameo from Richard Dreyfuss you already know not to expect serious acting! It was good for keeping me entertained for a night. Looking forward to part 2!
